We moved to the cloud... we must be more secure?

So you have have moved your business to a service such as Office 365 or Azure? Let’s not take our eye of the game. Granted, Microsoft has invested billions into their products, data centres and security and we trust them to look after our data.

Having no more 3am call outs for your support team is fantastic, but let’s not forget Microsoft are merely providing us a framework to build upon. This framework delivered right will enable us to work more productively and securely than ever.

With the introduction of the GDPR legislation in 2018, this topic of information security has never been so relevant. It’s up to the businesses and customer to ensure their data and the policies are compliant and cloud friendly.

So what about the basics?

Our most popular consulting engagement has brought some interesting facts to life. Although most businesses deploy Office365, many miss out on locking down and securing their tenant by following best practice that has been popular in on-premises environments for years.

You wouldn’t allow anyone to have Domain Admin access in your Active Directory environment, so why would it be acceptable to allow anyone in your Global Admin group within Office 365? This is the same with the likes of device and asset management. Businesses often find they do not have adequate policies to cover lost or stolen devices such as phones. Without these staples in place, can you guarantee your data is secure?

Tools to help.

Recently, Microsoft has released a fantastic tool for Office 365 called Secure Score. I like to describe it as a credit score for tenant security. It analyses your current Office 365 security configuration and compares it to industry best practice. You are then given a score which gives you an idea as to how secure you are.

The key with any of this is analysing and securing your data without compromising productivity. If you can get that right, then you are well on your way to becoming a cloud centre of excellence which, let's be honest, we are all aiming for.

Take a look at Secure Score over at https://securescore.office.com and see how your Office 365 security looks.
